London Bridge
Spanning the River Thames, London Bridge connects the City of London on the north bank with Southwark on the south, serving as a link between two of London’s most famous districts. While it’s often mistaken for the perhaps more decorative neighbour, Tower Bridge, London Bridge holds its own as one of the most historically significant structures in the city, dating back nearly 2,000 years to Roman times!
The current London Bridge was opened in 1973, replacing a 19th century stone bridge that was famously sold and relocated to Arizona in the 1960s. But the site itself has been home to a series of bridges since the first wooden version was constructed by the Romans in 50 AD. Throughout history, London Bridge has been a vital crossing point, a hub of commerce, and even a site of macabre displays during London’s medieval period, when the heads of traitors were mounted on spikes as a warning to others.
Today, however, you won’t spot any mounted heads, but you will be in a fantastic location to enjoy some of London’s landmarks and attractions.
